Pelvic Categories

Our pelvis is made of three different bones (2 ilium and 1 sacrum) and four joints (2 sacroiliac joints, the pubic symphysis and the L5-S1 disc space). In order to work properly all 3 of these bones and all 4 joints have to have proper alignment and movement while sitting, standing, walking, lifting, or any other movement. If their alignment gets off or joints become restrictive or sometimes are allowed to move too much symptoms are created. These symptoms are indicators that something is wrong and needs to be corrected. The different possibilities of twisting, torsion, or altered biomechanics of the pelvis are categorized into 3 different categories: 1, 2, and 3 and each create their own problems.

Category 1:

                -cervical spine tension

-pain and limited motion on turning the head (difficult to back out your car)

                - torsion of the shoulder girdle manifesting as thoracic outlet syndrome

Category 2:

-leg pain that develops during the night but is not there during the day

                - mid-thoracic, lumbar, or abdominal pain often brought on by lifting

                - dropped arch

Category 3:

                -severe sciatica

                -disc bulge or herniation

These categories of the pelvis can be observed in how someone stands: if one hip is forward relative to the other or if they frequently shift from one leg to the other. The different misalignments will create certain patterns of muscle weakness in the body and it is through the testing of those muscles that pelvic categories can be found and corrected.
