Car Accidents and Chiropractic

What to do after a car accident and why chiropractic is important.

When you have been in a car accident, your body suffers injury, even if it’s only at 5 mph. One of the most common injuries from an accident is the damaging effect of whiplash. When a vehicle stops suddenly or is rear ended in a collision, the seat belt prevents the body from being thrown forward, but the head may snap forward, backward, or even side to side. This can cause a whiplash injury or a cervical hyper extension. This kind of injury will destabilize the spine and it will become out of alignment. The tricky thing about this kind of injury is that it isn’t always immediately painful; the injury may cause pain years later if not properly treated. The seriousness of the physical effects of an accident is not always known or felt immediately following. It can take days, weeks or even months for major symptoms to show up. If ignored, the pain may go away, but the spinal damage will not heal correctly, causing spinal degeneration. The permanent damage that results may lead to a lifelong pain and discomfort. This is why it is important to visit a chiropractor as soon as possible after an accident. In addition to the pain caused by whiplash, you may have any of the following symptoms:

  • Blurred vision
  • Neck and back pain
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Shoulder pain
  • Reduced range of motion in the neck
  • Stiffness
  • Change in mood or behavior
  • Sleep Disturbances
  • Numbness or tingling in extremities

Any body part that is jarred or thrown forward unexpectedly and beyond normal limits can sustain stretched ligaments and even tears. Those supporting the head and neck are especially vulnerable to this kind of tearing during a collision. Since chiropractors specialize in the care of bones, muscles, nerves and connective tissue, they are crucial to visit after an accident. All those major parts of the body are important to keep in optimal health and correct alignment so they can function properly and all body systems can operate seamlessly.

At Chiropractic Wellness, we realign the spine to stop the pain and repair the damage. In addition to adjustments, we also use physical therapy and personalized nutrition to insure the best healing. Physical therapy works with gentle exercises to strengthen and stabilize the spine while working to increase flexibility and ease of movement. Dr. Quinn will also work with you to see what kind of supplements you may need to speed up healing, which may be to decrease inflammation, repair cartilage, or reduce pain. We work with all car insurances to ensure that you get the care you need. Call for an appointment or to talk to the doctor about any questions you have.

After an accident, it’s important to talk to your insurance provider. After an accident, it’s best to file a claim and to speak to your agent about the benefits you have and what options are available in moving forward. In most cases, you can either choose to work solely with the insurance companies involved, or you can choose to hire a lawyer to help you in your case. Either way, we work with all car insurances and lawyers to ensure that you get the care you need. Please call for an appointment or to talk to the doctor about any questions that you may have.
